CURRICULUM READING: Our reading curriculum uses many resources, including the WONDERS reading program. Students will be learning many new skills and keeping and "interactive" notebook full of activities that practice these new skills. The second grade staff is very proud of a program we started awhile ago called "Walk to Read". In the past, we had Thirty minutes a day we divided students into smaller groups where your child would be working with other students focusing on a particular skill or level of understanding. Teachers moved students as needed and curriculum was adjusted according to each child's needs. this year, Because we cannot work outside of our home room we kind of gave up on the idea.....for about three minutes! Our group of teachers will be working creatively to try and make some type of personalized reading time! It has been too successful to not continue! Most days your child will have Literacy Centers to work on independently. A weekly agenda will provide them with choices and activities based around the weekly reading objectives. Science and Social studies concepts will be integrated during this time as well. We also will be doing creative writing, Poem of the week, and "mentor" stories for grammar. MATH: We use the EVERYDAY MATH series. Students will have opportunities to use technology in their math practice. We also will be doing math workshop most days! STEM projects are another FUN part of our learning! SPELLING: Spelling words are based on the reading themes and stories. I start the week with a pretest. Students who get all of their words right do NOT have to test again on Friday! These lists should be practiced at home during the week. There will be a spelling test every Friday. SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE: A lot of the curriculum will be integrated with reading. As a second grade team we have discovered some standards that need to be covered a little differently in a program we call "SUPER SCIENCE"! This is another activity we will be creatively working on this year because of social distancing requirements. During the year on "short" weeks we will be concentrating on a standard with intensive focus on the material. Each teacher has become a "master" at a standard, and your child's class will move to a particular teacher for that standard.
